BREAST AUGMENTATION

The procedure of breast augmentation, also known as breast plastic surgery, creates or restores the size of the breast using silicone implants.

It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, having a long and successful track record in satisfying women who wish to enhance, recover or restore the balance of their body features.

When to consider breast augmentation

• If you want better breast proportions or a more attractive breast shape.
• If you want your clothes to look flattering.
• If pregnancy, weight loss or ageing has affected the size and shape of your breasts.

How to know if you need breast augmentation

The following are some of the most common reasons why it would be good to consider breast augmentation:

• You feel your breasts are too small for your body.
• You feel very awkward wearing a swimsuit, a tight garment or a deep neckline.
• Your breasts have become smaller or there is breast ptosis (sagging) or loss of volume after giving birth or because of weight loss.
• You have observed anisomastia, that is one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.

How breast augmentation is performed

During the breast augmentation procedure, I create a pocket in which I place implants of a round or anatomical shape (teardrop shape).

Access can be gained from the areola, the axillary crease and, most commonly, from the inframammary fold.

Going back to plastic breast surgery with silicone implants, it is your anatomy and my recommendations that will determine the position of the implants.

As I mentioned above, the implants are placed in the pocket created under the pectoral muscle or under the mammary gland.

You should know that an implant placed under the pectoral muscle interferes less with mammograms and breast feeding.

During your first visit to my clinic, we will have the opportunity to discuss in detail everything you would like to know about:

• The size.
• Whether round or anatomical silicone implants are going to be used.
• Whether the implants are going to be placed over or under the pectoral muscle.
• The point where the incision is going to be made.

Furthermore, we will have the chance to discuss the common complications, which rarely occur. These could be a hematoma, an inflammation or capsular contracture. Actually, a capsule is always created around the implants and capsular contraction could occur to a very small percentage, resulting in hardening of the implant, without any adverse health effects.

It is important to know that the implants I use are approved by the FDA (the United States Food and Drugs Administration). These are manufactured by the world famous Brands of Mentor and Allergan, which makes the process totally safe due to the quality and the conducted inspections, but also due to my own surgical techniques.

As regards the incision, I will supply you with some silicone sheets and possibly recommend a Fraxel Restore Laser treatment, which can be done at my clinic.

Myths and truths about breast augmentation

MYTH	TRUTH
The breast looks unnatural and feels unnatural to the touch.	The new silicone implants are natural in both feel and appearance.
There will be a problem with breast feeding.	It has been medically proven that silicone implants do not have adverse effects on health or breastfeeding.
Implants must be replaced regularly.	The new implants are intended to last for a lifetime although there may be warnings & signs of change, for example in case of capsular contracture.
Implants are dangerous and cause cancer.	The strongest argument against the idea that implants are dangerous is that silicone implants are used in breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
The breast can “deflate” during a flight.	There is no such possibility whatsoever.
