When to consider rhinoplasty

  • If you are unhappy with the shape, size or angle of your nose.
  • If your nose is too large or too small compared with the rest of your face.
  • If you have respiratory problems resulting from nasal deformities.
  • If you have a hook nose or if you have an extremely upward pointing or downward pointing nose.

How to know if you need rhinoplasty

The following are some of the most common reasons why it would be good to consider the possibility of rhinoplasty:

  • Your nose is too big or too small.
  • Your nose does not suit your face.
  • Your nose is crooked, has an unattractive shape, or is not aligned.
  • You have difficulty breathing.
  • You have a birth defect that you would like to get fixed.
  • You want to enhance the appearance of your nose
  • You have experienced the unsatisfactory results of a previous rhinoplasty and you would like to correct them.
  • You nose requires correction due to injury suffered in an accident.

How rhinoplasty is performed

Rhinoplasty is performed exclusively in an organized operating room, with an anesthesiologist present throughout the procedure.

During rhinoplasty, nose cartilage and bone are transformed so that the desired aesthetic harmony can be achieved. This often requires:

  • Osteotomies, for the nose to appear narrower and aligned.
  • Cartilage grafts usually from the septum of the nose or the ear, to raise the dorsal profile.
  • Repositioning of the skin and soft tissues in the “new” nose.

In many cases, these incisions are made in the nasal mucosa and are not «invisible». Sometimes rhinoplasty is an open procedure (known as «open structure rhinoplasty»), where the incision is made at the narrowest part of the columella and the results are equally satisfactory. If narrowing of the nostrils is required, small portions are removed and the incision is still not evident.

The duration of the procedure is, on average, one and a half hours and patients stay in hospital from a few to 24 hours.

In about 7 days, the special splint that has been placed during the operation is removed. The end result can be clearly seen after six months, when the expected slight swelling has subsided.

Rhinoplasty is a completely painless procedure.
